Swim Work complete on Holly Pools

s we told you back in January, at Holly Pools over the winter we have been working on the bottom part of the lake which formerly was only partly accessible from the old stalking swim. This has now been replaced with a water level swim much like the Dam swim. We had to remove 13 trees or former trees to clear this area – the largest of which fell into the lake during a storm last December. The stump of this has been left to form part of the new swim retaining wall – we hope it will weather in and look more natural! At the top of the access steps is a huge area big enough for 2 bivvies. This means anglers can bivvy together and fish the new stump swim and Pauls swim (which is just 25 meters away) while socialising in one “camp”.

We have decided that we will not implement this as a rule yet, but for 2013 (in common with an increasing number of venues) we are asking anglers to consider handling all larger carp – over 30lb – in the lake. This has obvious massive fish welfare benefits, with little danger of damage and no harm done if the fish flaps around or is dropped accidentally. We have a floating carp cradle and floating slings to help with de-hooking, treatment and posing for pictures. What we did need was far better access to the water, so with that in mind we have added steps to the 2 swims that are not at water level. It should be interesting to see how this works during the season.
Lastly, this week will see gravel the access path extended right around to the stalking swim. We hope this all makes fishing at Holly Pools more comfortable and sociable than ever before, whilst access is superb in all weathers. See you on the bank!
