Inflight at Vaux

An aerial flight over Vaux lake, designed to give you a real taster of the venue's layout and lake features.

Vaux is a 3.5 acre carp lake, 2 hours from the ferry at Caen. Exceptionally high standard accommodation at the lakeside and, with a splash pool in the garden aswell, it's a perfect family venue. Good head of carp into the 40's.

Talking Tactics at Vaux

Our dutch anglers fishing Vaux this month brought heavy tackle with them; large hooks, 30lb line, etc because the lakes that they fish in Holland are full of zebra mussel beds, gravel bars and snags…

To cope with this they tend to use heavy lines, non-break-away lead systems and very large hooks. They were fishing days only, no nights and the heavy tackle was visual to the carp in the clear water.
At the start of the week only a small number of carp were landed, so to overcome the heavy tackle, although we kept the heavy main line, we incorporated fluorocarbon leaders and break-away lead set-ups, with the end tackle a stiff boom. The end tackle consisted of a fluorocarbon stiff boom and whipped to that was a 24lb braided hook length with the hook link tied to a 6 – 7 size mugga, fished with a bottom bait.
An alternative boom was also being fished, all as the first except the hook was a long shank naylor, fished with a pop-up trimmed to apple core shape, tied 360-style. It was the 360-style which led to the two forties in quick succession and the bottom bait accounted for the thirties.

Sizeable Pike comes out at Vaux

Ann Marshalls’ family must have been fairly surprised when they reeled this 24lb pike in (on a boilie) last week when fishing Vaux.

They followed this up with 3 doubles from top of the lake, 4 twenties and 2 thirties at 31lb and 35lb. All fish over 20lb were caught from the dam wall. Their most successful tactic was walking baits round to the sluice and putting them 2-3 meters off the wall. High-viz popups and yellow dumbbells worked the best.

‘Two Tone’ Carp Makes an Appearance at Vaux

35.02
35.02
Paul Steele visited Vaux at the beginning of April, here’s his catch report…
Details of your catches: 40lb11oz mirror, 35lb2oz mirror and 24lb7oz common. 3 pike up to 4lb. Lots of roach and perch (1lb8oz to 1lb14oz)
Comments: We chose Vaux again due to it being an excellent venue for a family holiday with good fishing right outside the house. Don’t let the catch report put you off; only one angler fishing for carp in 0-8degc, north easterly winds, fishing days only.

Really pleased to see “two tone”. Coarse fishing for perch, pike and roach kept the family happy all week.

    Chas’s Big Carp Euro Rig – A Safe Carp Rig

    The component parts of Chas’s safe carp rig
    A disturbing aspect of owning Vaux French carp lake is that I find numbers of my carp each year dragging leaders and leads because the tackle used by some anglers does not allow the leads to drop off the clips.  The reasons can be;
    • leaders cannot pass freely through the tail rubbers to safety clips
    • that rubbers are pushed onto clips too tightly
    • that the wrong tail rubbers to safety clips are used
    • tail rubbers are superglued on
    • leads are tied to clips because anglers don’t want to lose their leads
    • the use of leaders incorporating tungsten putty.
    Any of these causes means that the carp cannot get rid of any of the component parts.
    Often simply cutting the tail rubbers to an angle allows leaders to pass freely through them.
    Here’s the component parts needed to make safe end tackle set-ups;
