Our dutch anglers fishing Vaux this month brought heavy tackle with them; large hooks, 30lb line, etc because the lakes that they fish in Holland are full of zebra mussel beds, gravel bars and snags…
To cope with this they tend to use heavy lines, non-break-away lead systems and very large hooks. They were fishing days only, no nights and the heavy tackle was visual to the carp in the clear water.
At the start of the week only a small number of carp were landed, so to overcome the heavy tackle, although we kept the heavy main line, we incorporated fluorocarbon leaders and break-away lead set-ups, with the end tackle a stiff boom. The end tackle consisted of a fluorocarbon stiff boom and whipped to that was a 24lb braided hook length with the hook link tied to a 6 – 7 size mugga, fished with a bottom bait.
An alternative boom was also being fished, all as the first except the hook was a long shank naylor, fished with a pop-up trimmed to apple core shape, tied 360-style. It was the 360-style which led to the two forties in quick succession and the bottom bait accounted for the thirties.
